Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts middle school teachers collaborated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA) to develop the “Earth as a System is Essential” (EaSiE) lesson series. The EaSiE lessons fill a critical need for a relevant curricular theme for middle school learning by incorporating NOAA resources and authentic Earth systems science content.
The EaSiE lessons focus on seasonal and climate changes in the Gulf of Maine and integrate national and state science standards and NOAA’s Ocean Literacy Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts. Specifically, the program has produced these lessons and assessments:
Although the lessons focus on phenomena and data from the Gulf of Maine, the core ideas and pedagogical approach are suited for all geographic regions. Now that the project has been completed, we would like to continue to ensure that it will be available to teachers so that they can deepen students’ understanding about the extraordinary world we live in.
